Devices detection is one of MWT's main features and it is crucial for the adaptation and multiserving engine.
MWT features a comprehensive devices database that cointains informations about several hundreds device models.
Before serving content MWT elaborates the User-Agent string of the client requesting a connection and performs database lookups in order to identify the device model. If identification succeeds MWT's device switch operation triggers: the system generates a cookie that will be used automatically to identify and to serve further requests from the same client based on it characteristics.
The main features of detection engine are listed below:
- User-Agent manipulation algorithm to optimize database lookups
- Detection is performed only once, a cookie enables MWT to "remember" an already detected client
- If a valid device ID is present in the requested URL (see paragrah URL rewriting) the detection engine triggers a device switch operation without performing detection
- At any time it is possible to force a device switch in order to navigate a mobile site version rendered for a specific device
- If device detection fails or an invalid device ID is present in the requested URL the systems falls back to a default device
